    A

    ACH (Air Changes Per Hour)
    The number of times an air purifier can theoretically replace the entire volume of air in a room within one hour.
    Activated Carbon Filter
    A filter layer that adsorbs odors, smoke, and some gases, usually paired with a HEPA filter rather than used alone.
    App Scheduling
    The ability to set a purifier or robot vacuum to run automatically at specific times through its companion app.
    Auto-Empty Dock (Self-Emptying Base)
    A robot vacuum dock that automatically empties the robot's dustbin into a larger bag, reducing how often you empty it manually.

    B

    Battery Runtime
    How long a robot vacuum can clean on a single charge before needing to return to its dock.
    Boundary Strip (Virtual Wall)
    A physical strip or app-defined line used to block a robot vacuum from entering a specific area.
    Brush Roll (Main Brush)
    The rotating brush underneath a robot vacuum that agitates and lifts debris into the suction path.

    CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate)
    A rating showing how much filtered air a purifier delivers per minute for smoke, dust, or pollen — higher numbers clean a given room faster.

    D

    Decibel (dB)
    The unit used to measure a device's noise level; every 10 dB increase roughly doubles perceived loudness.
    Docking Station
    The base a robot vacuum returns to for charging, and in some models, for auto-emptying or mopping pad washing.

    F

    Filter Life Indicator
    A light or app notification estimating when a purifier's filter needs replacing, based on runtime rather than actual air quality.

    H

    HEPA Filter
    A filter standard capturing at least 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in size, the benchmark for effective air purification.

    I

    Ionizer
    A feature that releases charged ions to make airborne particles clump together and settle faster, sometimes producing ozone as a byproduct.

    L

    LIDAR
    A laser-based sensor some robot vacuums use to map a room's layout precisely, generally more accurate than camera-based navigation.

    M

    MERV Rating
    A filter effectiveness scale used mainly for HVAC filters, sometimes referenced alongside HEPA ratings for comparison.
    Mopping Attachment
    A water tank and pad attachment that lets a robot vacuum damp-mop hard floors during or after vacuuming.
    Multi-Floor Mapping
    The ability of a robot vacuum to save and recall separate floor plans for different levels of a home.

    N

    Negative Ion
    A negatively charged air particle released by some purifiers, marketed for air-freshening effects though evidence of health benefits is limited.
    No-Go Zone
    An app-defined area a robot vacuum is instructed to avoid, such as a pet's food bowl or a cluttered corner.

    O

    Obstacle Avoidance
    A robot vacuum's ability to detect and steer around objects like cables, shoes, or pet waste in real time.
    Ozone Generator
    A device or purifier feature that produces ozone to neutralize odors; ozone itself is a lung irritant at higher concentrations.

    P

    PM2.5 / PM10
    Measurements of particulate matter by size in micrometers; PM2.5 particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs.
    Pre-Filter
    A washable, coarse filter layer that captures large particles like hair and lint before air reaches the HEPA filter, extending its life.

    S

    SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping)
    The technology robot vacuums use to build a map of a space while simultaneously tracking their own position within it.
    Side Brush
    The spinning brush on a robot vacuum's edge that sweeps debris from corners and along walls into the main brush's path.
    Suction Power (Pa)
    A robot vacuum's suction strength, measured in Pascals; higher numbers generally mean better performance on carpet.

    T

    True HEPA vs. HEPA-Type
    True HEPA meets the certified 99.97% capture standard; "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like" filters are not independently certified and often perform worse.

    V

    VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)
    Gases released from products like paint, cleaning supplies, and furniture that can affect indoor air quality; activated carbon filters help reduce them.

    W

    Wi-Fi Connectivity & Smart Home Integration
    A device's ability to connect to home Wi-Fi for app control and integration with platforms like Alexa or Google Home.
